The Netherlands 2013: Days 1 and 2

The 2013 field trip to The Netherlands. George (Blumberg) took so many great photos this year, I have decided to make these the focus of the report. I have also included links where you can find out more about the places that the students went to. I should mention that for most of this field trip, the second year  undergraduate students in construction join together with the postgraduate students taking the MSc PMBE apart from one day when they split into separate groups.

Day 1 (20 January 2013)

The coach left Oxford at 6.00am. It was going to be a long day.

On the coach with the very apt 'snow' hat.

Snow at Dover

Snow on the way to Antwerp.

First stop: Antwerp. The students were there for a visit to the Law Courts and Central Station. The Central Station is an amazing building. If you're interested, there are some more great images here.

Back on the coach and onto Amsterdam, where it was still snowing.

Max and Esra outside the Poet Hotel (where everyone stayed).

Amsterdam. And cold.

Day 2 (21 January 2013)
Day 2 started with a leisurely walk through Amsterdam to the Central Station Information Centre for a presentation on Amsterdam and Ijburg. Closely followed by a presentation on the development taking place at Amsterdam Central Station. The students then split into groups for a tour of Central Station.

How many students can you fit on an escalator?

And then lunch. And back on the coach to Ijburg. Otherwise known as the city of islands.

The first of many snowball fights.

More snowball fights in Ijburg

Look carefully at this photo...in the background you can see one of Ijburg's famous bridges. This one is known as the 'bra bridge' due to it's shape. As Ijburg is built on a series of islands, the bridges are crucial and each one has been designed by a leading architect. Take a look at the first two bridges (including the 'bra bridge') that were designed by the UK-based architects, Grimshaw and also at the following video which shows the 'bra bridge' at night. Very relaxing.

That was the end of the second day. Check out the next post for days 3, 4 and 5.
