Careers and Industrial Placements 2015

A very important feature of the BSc Construction Project Management and BSc Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management at Oxford Brookes is the Industrial Placement that takes place during the third year of each degree programme. The benefits for our students include:

  • Early exposure to the industry
  • Practical experience
  • Course subjects are put into context
  • Paid employment during the placement year
  • Potential sponsorship of final year
  • An opportunity to gain more understanding of future career pathways
  • Adds value to the final year of study
  • Experienced graduates are in demand.

...and I think the students who have been on placement would agree with this. You can read some more comments from our students about their experience of industrial placements on the Oxford Brookes website.

So, how do our second year students find out about opportunities for placements? The 2015 careers programme kicked off with the Built Environment Careers Fair which took place on 12 October. This year more than 40 companies attended the fair as well as staff from the Oxford Brookes Careers and Employment Centre. A great day for networking and finding out more information about placements (and permanent jobs).

This was followed by the Industrial Placements Fair where the final year students (who were out in industry last year) presented their final reports on their year out. AB115 was buzzing with excitement as staff and second year students chatted to the final year students about their experiences.

Finally, Michael Hill (Programme Lead) and Andy King (Placements Manager) have organised a series of presentations from construction companies including: ARCADIS, Symm, Wates, FLUOR, Quinn London, Gleeds and ISG. They will, of course, also be running sessions on how the industrial placement works.

One of our recent graduates, Jack Frazier, now works for Mace as an Assistant Commercial Manager - here he is talking about his current role:
